Abstract

Cholera is a disease that has plagued humanity for several centuries with her recurring epidemics. The present study exhibits and analyzes the sanitary measures taken by the Greek state in the second half of the 19th century until 1911, in order to confront the epidemics of this disease. In this specific era the third (1852-1859), the fourth (1863-1879) and the sixth (1899-1923) cholera epidemics made their appearance. This particular time period Greece had hardly been liberated from the occupation of the Ottoman Empire and despite the enormous socio-economic problems it faced, it even attempted with some delay, to follow the models of European countries with regard to the health sector. Specifically, the measures taken by the Greek government during the third and fourth epidemics of the disease were limited and very similar. In Europe at the same time period knowledge for the disease was limited -with the exception of Snow’s discovery, regarding polluted water- and complete confusion with regard to the confrontation of the disease prevailed. During the sixth epidemic of cholera things had changed; the discovery of Robert Koch, who classified cholera as a bacterial disease, it led to international sanitary conferences, in which Greece was also a participant, on the reception of organised rules of confrontation of epidemics and precaution against the illness. This was an essential step for reforms in the sanitary system and interventions in Europe and in the Greek state for guaranteeing the individual and general public from the cholera.
