Abstract In this work a series of organotin compounds are studied both as to their ability to bind selectively and reversibly inorganic anions and as to their suitability to act as ionophores in liquid membrane ion selective electrodes. In the first part of this work we will present a series of tri-organotin compounds. We will present their structural features and relate them with their potentiometric response to chloride when these are inserted into liquid polymeric membranes. We will also focus on the increase of the lifetime of these compounds in the organic phase of the membranes, in order to increase the precision and reliability of their potentiometric response to chloride, to which they are selective and which will therefore serve as a model anion. In the second part we will present a series of organoditin compounds, which bind reversibly and selectively fluoride. We will show that the inorganic substituents, the distance between the tin atoms and the increase in the lipophilicity of the organic substituents play an important role both in the chemical recognition towards fluoride and to their applicability as fluoride selective ionophores in liquid membrane ion selective electrodes.
