Abstract Spatial navigation is a fundamental ability of animals, assisting vital functions such as food hunt or avoiding a predator. System neuroscience research focusing on vision, often lacks naturalistic environments, since most studies use largely simplified visual cues without additional sensory information. In order to understand how the cortex processes sensory information in the natural environment, reproduction of ethologically relevant behavior is required, by simulating the physical world. Thus, this project focuses on creating a two-dimensional virtual space, where mice use olfaction to navigate. We specifically constructed the experimental setup and developed Python-based software that runs the task and interacts with a database remotely. Finally, preliminary experiments were done to optimize and finalize a protocol that would be used to quantitatively validate its efficiency
