Abstract The present work reviews the difficulties faced by university students, when they are confronted with the subject of Linear Algebra for the first time in the early years of their studies. For this purpose, the work examines the responses given by students in their final exams at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Crete, who attended the two compulsory courses, Introduction to Linear Algebra and Linear Algebra I during the academic years 2002-03 and 2003-04 respectively. The teaching of the courses Introduction to Linear Algebra and Linear Algebra I is studied within this context. Then, an overview is presented pertaining to the existing literature about some of the main difficulties faced by students in the Linear Algebra course. The theoretical framework used to assess the responses of students is the one proposed by Stewart (2008), which combines Tall’s Three Worlds of Mathematics and Dubinsky’s APOS theory.
