Abstract

The social policy for health is only one part of the general policy exercised by the national government and as such must be fully harmonized with its political intentions. The current trend in Greece is the transfer of more powers and responsibilities to the local governments, in an effort of copying the Scandinavian model of social welfare in our country. The present study involves the component parameters of the social policy for health, as it is exercised by local governments and especially municipalities. For this intention, here are analyzed the possible meanings of the term “social policy”, but also the evolution of the institution of local government. In the final part of the paper, the conditions and applications of social policy programmes for public health in the former municipality of N. Alikarnassos are explored. Καλλικράτης».
