| Abstract |
Theoretical framework: It has been found that midwives around the world are faced with a multitude of challenges that impede its holistic role either partially either completely. Investigating the factors that adversely affect the holistic role of midwives in Primary Health Care is expected to provide information on the way that midwifery is practiced within the aforementioned structures.
Aim: This study aims to highlight the potential challenges and barriers that limit the holistic role of midwives in P.H.C. in representative centers in Crete, aiming in improving the midwife's contribution to promote and protect public health.
Methodology: This is a qualitative study using semi-structured in-depth interviews. The sample of the study consisted of 19 midwives working in 15 different urban and rural P.H.C. structures of Crete.
Results: The analysis of the data revealed eight themes related to the challenges and barriers that midwives encounter in performing their duties in P.H.C. that limit their role. Those are, 1) Lack of recognition of the role of midwives in P.H.C. 2) Failure to prescribe screening and pregnancy test 3) Inadequate undergraduate education 4) Lack of human resources, equipment and infrastructure 5) Bureaucracy 6) Inadequate link to a referral hospital and cooperation with gynecologists and other specialties 8) Medical-centered care model.
Conclusions: The present study highlighted the challenges that midwives face in performing their daily tasks in line with those of other midwives. Obstacles and challenges in the working environment of midwives, which were related to the particularities of the Greek health system were revealed. The organization, institutional and operational support of primary care midwives is expected to improve midwives' contribution to the promotion and protection of public and primary care health.
