Abstract The European Union's trade policy needs to be seen in the context of two of today's realities. The first is the importance of the Union itself as an important global player. The second is how globalization is changing the international environment. Furthermore, the European Union would say that it is the largest economy in the world, the largest exporter and importer, the largest investor and recipient of foreign investment and the largest donor of aid. 7% of the world's population accounts for more than a quarter of the world's wealth, as measured by gross domestic product (GDP), the total value of goods and services produced. The single market with the free movement of goods, services, people and capital at the borders of the European Union is the cornerstone of the Union's capacity to create jobs in trade with other countries and regions. The European Union is also the one responsible for the market and it is also the one that manages trade relations with the wider world, and it also has much greater weight in international trade negotiations than its members. The European Union would call it an active, economic and political agent with growing regional and global interests but also responsibilities.
