Abstract

The work Imagines of Philostratus is characterized as one of the first descriptions (ekphrasis) of works of art and particularly of painting. The work includes 65 descriptions of paintings which are divided into two books. The themes of the works of painting which are described are based in literature and mythological role models, expressing this way the educative character of the whole work. The author, Philostratus the major, most possibly was born at 170 ad. in Athens and achieves to enter the imperial court of the empress Julia Domna (wife of emperor Septimius Sevirus and mother of the next emperor Caracalla). The work Imagines was probably completed during the year 200 ad. This particular study initially intends on analyzing the political and historical phenomenon of the second sophistic period giving emphasis at the effects of atticism (the mimic adaptation of the Greek attic dialect of the classical age) in romaic society and in the shaping of the Hellenic identity in the roman empire. The second chapter of the study is focusing in the examination of history of knowledge, education during the second sophistic period highlighting the ways of teaching history and historiography in the ancient classroom through the rhetoric progymnasmata. Finally, the third chapter of the study analyses the value of ekphrasis in the history of ancient education during the second sophistic period and particularly the contribution of the work Imagines of the Philostratus the major in the educative processes and especially in the ways of interpretation as far the works of painting are concerned.
