Abstract Phthalates are compounds widely used mainly as plasticizers in polymers to impart flexibility, transparency and other desirable properties. However, as these compounds are simply added to the polymer without binding chemically to its molecules they can be easily released into the environment. This has been detected in a variety of environmental samples such as air and soil, as well as in food and water, packaged in plastic packs containing phthalates. The objective of this study was to determine the concentration of phthalates in samples of soft drinks (soda type) contained in plastic bottles. For this analysis was used the technique of liquid-liquid extraction system in combination with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The concentrations of phthalates in most samples of this study were below the detection limits of the methodology used. In some samples of soft drinks (soda type) where phthalate esters were detected the DEHP was found in greater abundance (maximum concentration 149,9 ng / L) and its relative contribution ranged between 43-100%.
