Abstract Mikos A 1.775 BP long mobile element from Drosophila hydel, is characterized by the presence of 225 long perfect inverted terminal repeats and two non-overlapping open reading frames(ORF1 and ORF2) an the same DNA strand. The two ORFs can be joined together by the spiling of a putative intron into a 341 amino acid polypeptide, witch shows extensive sequence similarity to the TG1A. Transposase encoded the TG1 mobile elements P, HOBO, HERMES and MARINER, Mikos is an additional system tha can be used for the genetic transformation of drosophila melanogaster. In addition, Mikos is the first transposable element that has been successfully exlpoited for the germline transformation of a non-drosophila species, the Mediterranean fruit fly ceratitis capitata.
