Abstract Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) is a class of porous materials. They arecharacterized as crystalline materials which consist of metal nodesor clusters and organic ligands that piece together through coordination bonds. The nature of the inorganic metal cluster and the geometry of the organic ligand define the structure of the MOF and make also possible control over it. Moreover, the organic ligand is amenable to modifications with functional groups, altering in that wayMOFs’ properties. Control over size, shape and functionality of pores in MOFs but also their excellent porosity make them excellent candidates for a variety of applications such as storage and separation of gases (CO2, CH4, H2, Xe, Kr), catalysis, drug storage. The purpose of this work is firstly, the synthesis and characterization of a MOF which has an amide functional group. Specifically, modification of a tetratopic isophthalate ligand with amide groups (H8L1) and its combination with Cu2+ aimed in synthesis of a MOF with tbo topology. Activation of this MOF allowed the study of adsorption properties in comparison with its non-functionalized analogue, Cu-tbo-MOF-5. In addition, three new MOFs were synthesized and characterized that are based in alkali earths ions and a tetrahedral ligand (H4MTBC). Ca-MTBC and Sr-MTBC are isostructural but Ba-MTBC has different structure. Successful activation of Ca-MTBC and Sr-MTBC led to porosity characterization and study of adsorption properties. Moreover, in order to further explore the diversity of MOF structures that contain alkali earth ions an amide tetratopic isophthalate ligand (H8L1) was combined with Sr2+. Finally, in order to explore the effect of functional groups in adsorption properties, the previously used tetrahedral ligand (H4MTBC) was modified with sulfone groups and combined with Ba2+. This specific functional group has also an effect in ligand’s geometry and subsequently in MOFs structure.
