Abstract Stand-up Comedy is a very widespread genre of live entertainment in the Western world. It emerged in the English-speaking world, the UK and the USA, in the second half of the 20th century, however its roots can be traced back to the live musical performances with elements of comic prose that had been performed in these countries since the mid-19th century. The main characteristic of the genre is the breaking of the so-called 'fourth wall' and the face-to-face contact between the person (or persons) on stage and the audience; comedians address the audience and often interact with it. In Greece, Stand-up Comedy was introduced in the mid-1970s. A decisive factor was the return of comedian Vassilis Triantafyllidis (Harry Klynn) in the winter of 1974, after having performed for nearly ten years in the stand-up scenes of North America (Montreal, Chicago, New York). In the following years, this genre of live comedy –mostly one-man shows– remained on the fringe, as an alternative and rather 'underground' art form. In the early 2000s, the video recording of performances from the 'Comedy Nights' organised by Loukia Rikaki gave a significant boost to Stand-up and made it a recognisable theatrical genre. Until the mid-2010s, new blood was rapidly introduced to the scene, which, combined with the wide acceptance by the audience, led to the blossoming of the genre in Greece
