Abstract |
In this dissertation, the photosensitizing properties of the water-soluble inclusion complex of C60 with two molecules of γ-cyclodextrine (γ-CD/C60) will be described. To this purpose, photooxidation of several alkenes and aromatic alkanes were performed in polar solvents with the γ-CD/C60 complex as photosensitizer. The most important findings are summarized as follows: The γ-CD/C60 complex photosensitizes the oxidation of alkenes and also aromatic alkanes in polar solvents and in very low concentrations (~ 10-5 M). The photooxygenation of aryl-substituted alkenes produces both, singlet oxygen and electron transfer induced products. With the alkyl-substituted alkenes only the ene products (via singlet oxygen) were obtained. It is known that the cyanoaromatic sensitizers sensitize the photooxidations of alkenes by these two distinct mechanisms. The γ-CD/C60 complex photosensitizes the oxidation of aromatic compounds in the presence of methyl viologen (MV+2) to produce oxygenated compounds via an electron transfer process. The photocatalytic properties of γ-CD/C60 complex are comparable with those of the electron-deficient sensitizer 9,10-dicyanoanthracene.
