Abstract

Aim: To check if statistical terminology and methods are used properly in articles published at ophthalmological journals. Methods: One hundred sixty six (166) articles were randomly selected from ophthalmological journals. A hundred (100) of them were found to serve the cause of the study. The sample was analyzed through a questionnaire, descriptive statistics were computed and their relation to journal’s IF, article’s citations and the involvement of statistician was evaluated. Results Data presentation is done with 1 to 3 tables or diagrams while mean and standard deviation (SD) is used (51%) for continuous variables. Frequencies and proportions are used for other types of variables. Statistical analysis is conducted usually with t-tests (40%), analysis of variance (40%) and contingency tables χ2(45,2%). Involvement of statistician (13%) seems to affect only the level of significance been stated (Fisher, p=0,033). Impact factor and citation reports do not seem to influence the frequency of statistical terms or methods not been used properly. Conclusion: Statistical terminology and methods not properly used is common in ophthalmological journals although does not seem affected by journal’s IF, paper’s citations or the involvement of statistician
