Abstract The use of diminutives especially in oral speech is a common morphological phenomenon in Modern Greek. The use of diminutives serves multiple communicative purposes and is pragmatically marked for intimacy, familiarity, affection, politeness or irony. The frequency of use of diminutives by native speakers of a language reflects cultural trends and reveals properties of communication. Despite the frequent use of diminutives in Greek, native speakers are hesitant to form them in other grammatical cases, such as the genitive. Especially, diminutives ending in /–àci/ (-άκι) and /–ùli/ (-ούλι), display very high rates of preference, though they seem to be missing the genitive case of the singular and the plural. Opinions differ regarding the possibility of these forms to be inflected as well as, the existence of an acceptable genitive form. Although genitive forms of diminutives are avoided in the standard language these forms are frequently attested in several dialects. The main purpose of the present study is to investigate and analyze trends regarding the formation of the genitive type of diminutives ending in suffixes / -àci / (-άκι) and / -ùli / (-ούλι) in samples of native speakers of Greek, consisting of kindergarten and elementary school students and adults. According to the results of the study, the common preference of children and adults was the suffixes / -ù / (-ού) and / -òn / (-ών) for the singular and the plural of the genitive case respectively, while age, school grade, as well as the morphophonological shape of diminutive forms were the variables, which affected the outcome of the results. We argue that socially defined norms influence and enforce the use of certain lexical types, while at the same time exclude the formation of other fully grammatical forms.
