Abstract In the threshold of the 21st century, the Information Society creates new opportunities for the development and the improvement of various aspects of everyday life. The emergence of the Information Society is based on the rapid evolution of the Information and Communications Technologies, which, together with the new opportunities that emerge, radically affect the working environment, entertainment, communication, transactions, etc. It is important that all applications and services are accessible to citizens with different needs and preferences, including people with disabilities. For people with disabilities in particular, the new technologies provide the potential for implementing the quality of life, in domains such as health, education, work, entertainment, etc. This dissertation presents the designing, implementation and evaluation of a user interface for the management of appliances, sensors and actuators of a “Smart Home” to be used by people with motor impairments of the upper extremities. Moreover, in the context of this dissertation, a simulation of appliances and actuators of the "Smart Home" was developed, which interacts with the user interface for management with the synchronization of the presentation and the state of the appliances, sensors and actuators. The use of hierarchical scanning constitutes an effective method of interaction for people with motor impairments of the upper extremities, mainly because of the increased speed of interaction that it provides in comparison to more traditional approaches, e.g. the virtual mouse. For the interaction of the user interface for the management of appliances and actuators, the tool FastScanner was used, which has been developed by the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory of the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas. The analysis of the results indicated that the system could constitute a useful tool for the management of appliances, sensors and actuators in "Smart Homes".
