Abstract |
Out of the findings of the research, it is confirmed that almost the total number of the students of the sample are familiar with the definitions of the producer, consumer, decomposer and the food chain as they are presented in the school subject. However, out of a deeper investigation of the way of thinking of the children, indicated a series of misconceptions held by a majority of students about the concepts of consumer, producer, decomposer, food chain and related concepts like food, photosynthesis, matter and energy. Furthermore, even though a great percentage of students can make a food chain correctly, the majority of the sample have not fully understood the flow of energy and the transfer of matter, which are symbolized through the food chains. Out of the results of the research, it is confirmed that the students face difficulty in predicting interactions between populations of the same food chain. What is more, they do not, to a great extent, use their knowledge regarding the food chains to understand relevant environmental problems. Finally, out of the statistically polishing up of the data, it was confirmed that the sex of the students and the cultural level of their parents affect their conceptions regarding the concepts of the study. |
