Abstract Objective: This study investigates the determinants of longevity in a selected sample of elderly in mountainous Crete, specifically in the area of Zoniana. The main aim was to create a deeper, more comprehensive and refined knowledge of the under investigation phenomenon, focusing on the subjective perceptions, beliefs and experiences of elder people living in Zoniana in relation to longevity. Methodology: Qualitative research was chosen. The main subjects of the interviews were identified after longevity based article’s bibliography review. According to these subjects, the biographical narratives were categorized. The basic method of data collection was semi-structured interviews of the over 80 years old people of Zoniana. Results: The collected and categorized results of five (5) men and four (4) women arose descriptive information concerning their demographic characteristics, diet and daily activity, consumption of herbs, health history and spirituality. The determinants of longevity that ensue from the qualitative data analysis research were a) marriage - fraternal life b) self-management c) healthy social life d) sense of safety e) follow new lifestyle according to medical advice f) Mediterranean diet g) positive-dynamic way of living e) religiousness. Conclusion: The determinants of longevity derived from the sample of 9 elderly living in Zoniana, lead conclusively to the importance of community cohesion, through which people create the sense of safety, of belonging and self-administration. The fact that the elderly of the Public Health & Health Care Management Faculty of Medicine – University of Crete sample take a dynamic and positive attitude in their life, influenced by their social values and religious beliefs is, also, an important observation.
