Abstract Current studies on aesthetics in antiquity neglect the contribution of ancient fiction to aesthetic discourse. The present dissertation is a study on the aesthetics of beauty and ugliness in the Satyrica, a Roman novel attributed to Petronius Arbiter and written probably in the age of Nero. The low-life, comic characters of the novel often engage in discussions about literary and art criticism, but at the same time they themselves are aesthetic subjects who perceive, comment on, and assess beauty and ugliness in art and life. The present dissertation aimed at studying Petronius' text in relation to the ancient aesthetic theories which treat the concepts of beauty and ugliness, and at discussing Petronius' contribution to the evolution of aesthetic thought. It thereby explored the ways in which the Satyrica takes part in the aesthetic discourse of its time, and argued that ancient fiction may also accommodate serious discussion about aesthetics. The methodological approach adopted in the present study has been based on the modern philosophical concept of "aesthetic experience", according to which the aesthetic experience of art cannot be separated from other forms of experience in everyday life. The goals of the project have beeb fulfilled by means of an interpretative literary analysis of Petronius’ text. At the same time, the proposed project took into account the relation between Petronius’ aesthetics and other aspects of the Satyrica, such as the text’s self-referentiality, the shifting focalization and the general philosophical stance of the narrator and/or author.
