Alternative Title “Vrokastro regional survey project” organization of space and landscape through geographic information systems
Author Κουριάτη, Αικατερίνη Νικολάου
Abstract Archaeological surface surveys are not just a trend. They come to be one of the most widespread scientific research methods suitable for extensive areas. Several adopted methodologies systematize data recording in a way that they become totally reliable and utilized. Respectively the “Vrokastro Survey Regional Project” located and recorded interdisciplinary, sites with archaeological evidence, from Prehistoric to Ottoman period. The former study was the occasion of this work. The “Regional Surface Survey Project” covered an area of 50 Km2 following a distinctive methodology and a consistent data recording system of the sites’ dimensions, the preservation condition and the geographic and topographic characteristics, collecting observations on modern land use and vegetation. The challenge and at the same time goal of our study was the diachronic correlation of geographic allocation, use and size of the archaeological sites together with the examination and exploration of influences that contributed to the formation of any land use system and environmental exploitation. This we did, taking into consideration both the environmental resultants and the generally accepted interpretations about social and political trends of any period, all over the island of Crete.
To accomplish our goals we created an integrated system for the administration and organization of the data. This system allows the construction and recall of complicated queries related to the function and chronology of each site, as well as the topographic characteristics that come with them, giving us the potential of comparison and statistical observations. Furthermore, the archaeological and historical identity of the sites is documented with the relative bibliographical references and scientific summarized reports in text. Selected queries have been used to connect the database to the GIS software. As soon as they were imported they got geographical location accuracy without losing any of their attributes. GIS allowed us to administrate the cartographic information and to experiment in locational and geostatistical analyses, so that we discover if and in what scale the environmental variables affected and determined the organization and utilization of space and landscape.
