Abstract Brucellosis is a worldwide zoonosis and the infection is transmitted to people. The disease caused by Brucella melitensis is endemic in Greece, as in the rest Mediterranean countries, although many programmes of control and eradication are implemented. The present study aims to evaluate the situation related to the above infection in goats and sheeps in the prefectures of Heraclion and Lassithi of Crete during 1998-2008. The data of Veterinary and Health services of the two regions was used for the purposes of the study. After the collection and classification of animal and human cases of brucellosis, there was a try of mapping and correlating the results in humans and animals and evaluating the trends of the decade. According to the results of the study, Brucella melitensis is endemic in Lassihi and Heraclion, despite the implementation of an eradication programme. Risk factor for people is working with animals, something that makes men more vulnerable. On the other hand, illegal trafficking is the main risk factor for goats and sheeps. The fact that Brucellosis caused by Brucella melitensis is a Public Health issue demands cooperative by Veterinary and Public Health services.
