Abstract The scientific community is interested in the interaction between aquaculture and the marine environment, as the sector advances, especially in the Mediterranean that is characterized by a "vulnerable" microbial food web. Numerous studies have fail to demonstrate the impact on water column in fish farm level. In the present study we examined the biotic and abiotic component of the water column at sites in, and outside an Allocated Zone for Aquaculture in Argolicos Gulf, focusing on the entire microbial food web. An inverted microscope was used for the identification and enumeration of microplankton groups, while the abundance of smaller groups was estimated using flow cytometry. Nutrient concentrations (ΝΗ4, PO4, SiO2) were higher at aquaculture stations and were followed by increased chlorophyll a concentration. Abundance of diatoms (microplankton), auto- and heterotriphic flagellates (nanoplankton), as well as viruses exhibit significant increase in aquaculture area, whilw prokaryote populations showed no difference or decreased. Prokaryotes and ciliates also exhibited changes in qualitative characteristics. The present study confirms the hypothesis for single fish farm environments, that there is rapid nutrient transfer to higher trophic levels though grazing and in aquaculture zone level.
