Abstract Background: Postnatal depression is reported at about 10-15% of the female population, according to international surveys, thus the specific causation remains yet unclear. Limited studies about postnatal depression have been conducted in Greece. Objectives: The objectives of the study is to record the prevalence of the disease in women of Heraklion and also the specific sociodemographic factors that affect it. Methods: This study is part of the mother-child birth cohort in Crete. The sample included 1078 women that completed the EPDS (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) through telephone interviews at about eight weeks after delivery. The cutoff point of the EPDS score was set to 12 and the analysis was controlled for confounders. Results: The sample consists mainly of Greek women (91,5%) aged 26-35 years old (64,9%), with medium educational status (48,1%). 14% of the women have developed a psychiatric disease at the past. The prevalence of postnatal depression came up to 13,6%, and was reported higher in women living in rural areas. When maternal educational status is high it has a protective effect against the disease (Relative Risk: RR=0,58). Women with psychological illness history had 84% higher risk to develop postnatal depression (RR=1.86, 95%CI 1,16- 2,98). Finally, the presence of noise was found to be related to 73% higher risk, while employment during pregnancy was related to 42% lower risk. Conclusions: The prevalence of postpartum depression at women in Crete is high, but relevant to other countries. Postpartum depression was found to be related to multiple factors, such as socioeconomic, environmental, life style and health related factors. Further research is needed to confirm the results, examine more risk factors and take effective precaution measures.
