Abstract Ocular rigidity is a macroscopic parameter which reflects the elastic properties of the eye. Because of non-linear properties of the bio- mechanical parameters of the eye , Friedenwald described an empirical formula to determine ocular rigidity. More specifically , he noted that the coefficient of ocular rigidity can be described by the pressure volume relation in the living human eye and defined it as a " measure of the resistance, which the eye exerts to distending forces". The quantification of the elastic properties of the eye and the coefficient of ocular rigidity has great clinical significance in tonography and in tonometry and is associated with the onset and progression of many eye diseases such as age- related macular degeneration . In the past many studies have determined the coefficient of ocular rigidity in enucleated eyes , or in vivo developing different methodologies with a common denominator their invasive nature . Aim of this thesis , is to determine ocular rigidity non-invasively in clinical practice . It is based on Friedenwald‟s principle as far as the dependence of ocular rigidity on the pressure - volume relationship is concerned , utilizing two different tonometric methods to determine intraocular pressure . Goldmann applanation tonometer is affected by geometrical and mechanical properties of the eye, as ocular rigidity coefficient , while Pascal tonometer does not depened on these features. Furthermore the determination of the volume change is not based on the axial length of the eye , but on the transverse and sagittal cross section . In this study we achieved to determine the coefficient of ocular rigidity in a non invasive way , with results that come to an agreement with other studies . Moreover we confirmed that the difference of pressure with two different methods of tonometry are correlated with ocular rigidity and may constitute a measure for determining ocular rigidity.
