Abstract Large quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are emitted into the atmosphere every year. The interactions of these emitted compounds in the presence of light are producing ozone that is a pollutant and its production rate depends on the NOx levels, the ratio of VOCs/NOx and the chemical pathways of VOC degradation. In the frame of the present study, we have developed a 0-d chemical model in order to investigate the O3 production efficiency (ΔO3i/ΔHCi) of the different solvents. For a number of solvents we have compiled the available kinetic data and constructed reduced chemical schemes of their degradation using the molecular lumping approach. A good agreement has been found between the box model results using the detailed and reduced (based on molecular lumping) chemistry schemes for several studied solvents. Using the calculated O3 production efficiency (ΔO3i/ΔHCi) of the various studied solvents as a criterion, we have been able to classify the studied new potential solvents by comparison with the traditionally used ones. The present study showed that the investigated ethers and in particular the vinyl ethers present small potential in producing O3 and in this respect might be an alternative to the traditionally used solvents.
