Abstract Despite increasing software support for Business Process Modeling, there are still misunderstandings, mainly because of terminology mismatches in business process models. Enriching business process models with semantic annotations derived from concepts of a domain ontology aims at overcoming this weakness of Business Process Modeling. In this work, we present an approach for adding semantic annotations to business process elements, especially in activities (tasks and sub-processes) of business processes, as they are the main elements of a business process model, using an ontology-based data matching strategy. Semantic annotations are automatically suggested to the business designer, based on a composed measure of similarity between ontology concepts and the activity label of the process to be annotated. The combined similarity measure is an aggregation of the degrees returned from three similarity measures, aka string, linguistic and syntactic. Each one of the aforementioned is a priori assigned a specifically weight by the system. Finally, filtering techniques are used to display options with high relevance only. By adding semantic information to process elements the precision of business process models increases, making them more intelligible to people and machine-readable, enabling automated reasoning services, such as querying the process space. For this purpose, we propose an automated approach for querying a business process model repository for semantically relevant elements and models. A basic BPMN ontology in OWL format has been developed for the needs of querying. Our approach has been implemented in SeMFIS tool, which has been extended to represent the new functionalities of automated semantic annotations of business process models. The BPMN language has been used for the representation of business process models, the OWL format for ontologies and the SPARQL for queries
