Abstract Phytoremediation of contaminated soils by heavy metals is a modern and promising technology. The present study focuses on the comparative study on the effects of different concentrations of Zn, Ni, Cd in the growth characteristics of Nicotiana tabacum and N. glauca species, their recruitment and distribution of these metals in their tissues and the parameters related to photosynthesis and oxidative stress. These species, due to several features, (e.g. high biomass, deep root system, tolerance to heavy metals) are of great interest in remediation of soil. N. tabacum and N. glauca settled in pots with artificial substrate in greenhouse conditions and grown for 42 days in the presence 0 - 5 mM Zn or 0 - 1 mM Ni or 0 - 2 mM Cd. High metal concentrations showed plant growth inhibition. Increasing metal concentrations in the culture medium resulted in higher metals accumulation in tissues of N. tabacum and N. glauca, especially in the root and the older leaves. The photosynthetic parameters studied (chlorophyll, induction of chlorophyll fluorescence, intensity of photosynthesis) showed no correlation with the concentration of metals. An increase of lipid peroxidation and response of non-enzymatic antioxidant mechanism observed after proline and total antioxidant capacity increment, in the plants studied. Concerning the enzymatic mechanism, stress of heavy metals resulted in suppression of the antioxidant enzymes studied in N. tabacum and induction in N. glauca. The results showed that both species used, can resist relatively high concentrations of metals Zn, Ni and Cd and accumulate significant quantities in their tissues. These properties are essential for the future development of the N. tabacum and N. glauca.
