Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate into the correlation between the capacity of stress management and spirituality (religiosity) in a rural region of Crete. The study design was cross sectional. Using the rural municipalities voting lists, 53 participants (aged 65+) were randomly selected and interviewed between the months of January 2007 – August 2007. Two questionnaires were used with personal interview. The first questionnaire was the “Royal Free” used to estimate religious and intellectual convictions and the second was the “SOC” (Sense of Coherence) questionnaire for the estimation of sense of coherence. Both questionnaires were translated and validated into Greek. The results showed a correlation between the SOC scale and the scale regarding the religious and intellectual convictions (p=0.010) as well as the total sum of religious and intellectual convictions (p= 0.035). The individuals that reported religious comprehension of life, were found to present a high level of spirituality (54.3%), and in general the study population was found to present a high capacity of stress management and simultaneously an elevated level of religiosity (spirituality). Conclusively, the positive correlation between religious and intellectual convictions and the capacity of stress management among the elderly residents of rural Crete could provide a partial interpretation their historically renowned excellent health status
