Abstract In recent years, the air pollution induced by the particulate matter (PM) triggers the interest of environmental research. Atmosphere contains various types of liquid and solid particles with different physicochemical properties, distinguished into categories according to their shape, composition, origin and diameter which come from a wide variety of anthropogenic and natural sources. The effects they cause both on health and environment are significant and often irreversible. Due to these particles, many regions of the planet, especially urban ones are characterized by low air quality. In this graduate work, aerosol sampling was carried out to determine their ionic composition in Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ in the area of Thissio, Αthens. Measurements of suspended particles were taken using the PILS-IC (Particle Into Liquid Sampler – Ion Chromatography) system during the winter season (November 2019-February 2020), at the National Observatory of Athens, which is located in the center of Athens in Thissio and serves as a receptor point, through dispersion and circulation, of aerosols from different possible sources. All results of the measurements were analyzed, interpreted and correlated with the most likely causes justifying variations in concentrations of water-soluble cations under study during sampling.
