Abstract The present work is part of CITYZEN program (megaCITY- Zoom for the ENvironment) and is focused on the study of the tr;axe metals in the atmosphere of Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea. Twelve elements were measured ( Al, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Ni, Mn, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb), in two fractions ( coarse PM10-2.5 and fine PM2.5). An acid microwave procedure followed by an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass spectrometry was applied to measure the consentration of the metals. Two diferent monitor sites were selected, Imvros at the Eastern Mediterranean and Sinop at Black Sea. The sampling period for both sites took place from April 2009 to February 2010. The consetration values of the total mass PM10 were found, for both fractions, higher at Sinop. At summer the values were higher at fine fraction, whereas at winter the values were higher at coarse fraction. Trace metals sush as Ni, Zn, Pb and As, that originated from human activities, were distributed mainly in fine fraction at Sinop. These metals were not detected at the atmosphere of Imvros. Trace metals such as Al, Ti, Fe, Mn that originated from natural emissions were distributed mainly in coarse fraction. The concetration values for Al-Fe were the highest for both size fractions. The comparison of the consentration values for both sites, with those from other sites of Eastern Mediterranean showed that the atmosphere of Black Sea is enriched with trace metals from anthropogenic emmisions, whereas Eastern Mediterranean is enriched with metals from natural emissions.
