Abstract In this work is studied the coupling of highly excited Rydberg states to ionization and/or dissociative continua, by using multiphonon ionization techniques combined with mass analysis. The molecules of interest are CS2 and N2O. In CS2 experiments have provided evidence for the structure in regions ca. 2eV above and below threshold. New Rydberg states are found for N2O superimposed on a strong dissociative continuum. Coupling among discrete states with this continuum produces distinctive Fano profiles in three photon resonant, four photon ionization.
