Abstract Blazars are the most numerous class of associated γ-ray sources (~ 55% of the total associations) in the Third Fermi Catalog (3FGL) and are characterized by their strong variability and their highly optically polarized light. In the 3FGL about 30% of the total sources are still unassociated due to the angular resolution (~ 0.07o) of the Fermi's Large Area Telescope . In this work we attempt to harness the optical polarization of blazars and use it as an association method. We introduce a ranking parameter (Bl) to quantify how suitable a candidate unassociated source is for optical polarization observations. Using Bl we verified the applicability of our method by comparing the unassociated sources with the associated blazars as observed by RoboPol. We theoretically bench-marked our method and calculated the percentage of blazars that will stand out from the background interstellar polarization for a given average field polarization. We found that for high galactic latitudes (b > 10°) ~ 80% of blazars will be 5σ above the average interstellar polarization of the field. Finally we provide the best candidates for the 2017 Skinakas observatory observing season.
