Abstract This study presents the synthesis and textural characterization of porous NiFe2O4 nanoparticles and demonstrates their photocatalytic activity for the reduction of toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). Nickel ferrite nanoparticles are prepared using the chemical co-precipitation method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and N2 physisorption measurements indicated that mesoporous structures of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles have a well-define cubic spinel structure and exhibit a high specific surface area (122-159 m2/g) and uniform pore size. The chemical composition of the materials was confirmed by elemental microanalysis (EDS). The as-prepared materials were studied as photocatalysts in the reduction of toxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Catalytic studies verified the high activity and stability of the NiFe2O4 mesoporous catalyst compared to the bulk-like NiFe2O4 solid and random aggregates of NiFe2O4 nanoparticles.
