Abstract Chemical sensors are extensively used for the quantitative and qualitative characterization of a large range of analytes. They are applied in analyses of water, foodstuffs, in clinical analyses, and in environmental and industrial settings. The selective recognition of the analyte is taking place at the sensing element of the sensor which is responsible, and determines its analytical characteristics. The transducer in turn translates the chemical information to an analytical signal. The aim of this work is the development of chemical sensors and biosensors based on heterostructures of Gallium Nitride (GaN). Initially the GaN crystal was evaluated in order to examine the possibilities of using this material as a transducer for the development of chemical sensors, by applying onto it selective polymeric membranes. Based on the heterojunction of AlGaN/GaN ChemHEMTs microsensors were developed and optimized for the selective response to the cations of potassium, sodium, ammonium, and the nitrate anion. The analytical characteristics of the sensors that were developed are clearly better that those reported internationally. There were efforts aiming at the design of potentiometric sensor based on nanostructures of GaN, and thus the ground was set for the further development of such sensors in the future. Finally, sensors based on GaN structures were employed as transducers in the development of glucose biosensors. The initial results are very promising towards this direction.
