Abstract |
In recent years, research has identified the postnatal period as a time of substantial morbidity for women and that the homevisiting postnatal services by a community midwife have important impact to the womens and neonatal health. The aim of this study is to examine the postnatal services delivered to women and neonatals and to describe the morbidity during the postnatal period. Study population consisted of 124 women that gave birth during the period of November 2002 til November 2004 and were residents of the municipalites Lampis and Foinika of Rethymnon. The women answered to a questionaire, that was designed in accordance to the objectives of the study and was previously pilot tested. The results suggest that the majority of the women received insufficient health care postnatally. The postnatal care were delivered in fragmented and not evidence based ways, since the individuals (usually relatives of the family) that took care of the mother postnataly were not health care professionals. Most of the women reported postnataly at least one symptom related to a health problem, regarding themselves or the neonatal. Womens views about the postnatal care by a community midwife were generally positive. More specifically, the majority of the women reported that it would be very helpful if a community midwife supported them during the breastfeeding or gave information for issues regarding hygiene and perineal care, diet, neonatal care and contraception during the postnatal period.
