| Abstract |
The current study examines teachers’ beliefs on students’ aggressive behavior. Qualitative data were collected through 20 interviews with secondary school teachers who work in Chania/Crete. Participants answered questions about students’ aggressive actions, the causes, the connection with the school climate, and finally the factors that prevent the management of students’ aggressiveness.
According to the findings the most common aggressive action is verbal violence. The main reason is the quality of family relationships and socialization. Aggressiveness was also associated with other causes such as students’ traits, the impact of media, the influence of peer group. Teachers believe that the education system in Greece, instead of soften the problems created by the family, reinforces them, because it does not help students to develop comprehensively, it ranks them only on the basis of their academic performance and it gives them a lot of stress. They recognize the importance of democratic and pedagogical climate of school and classroom that improves children's behavior and creates suitable learning conditions.
Students’ aggressiveness is addressed through personal discussions with those involved, the principal and the school teachers and contacts with the parents. Finally, teachers feel that they did not create the problem and they cannot fully cope with it on their own. They believe there should be experts at school to help students and teachers and they argue that education system needs to change, to make students be positive at school.
