Abstract

Injuries are a real plague, since 20,000,000 people around the globe have died because of them, in the last ten years alone. Statistically for every death, four people become severely injured. Focusing on Greece, 24,000 accidents (automobile, labor, violent acts or random) happen every year, resulting in 2,500 death casualties and 32,000 injuries, 4,500 of them in critical condition. The annual financial cost of these accidents in the country has been estimated to sum up to 338 million euro (€). In this context, the Greek health system is facing a great challenge, whether it can adequately provide organized, functional and staffed health facilities for the rehabilitation of the injured, but also of patients in general. This study attempts to evaluate the health system through the experience of a multi-trauma patient, who’s been utilizing various health and after-care services since her car accident; by the means of qualitative research, using the biographical –narrative interview as its tool. The findings of the study underline the urgent need of the Greek health system for reorganization, but also re-refinement of its purpose, due to the multiple problems it faces both in operational level and organizational. These problems prevent the Health System from providing a level of adequate satisfaction to its users, which in many cases, such as a multi-trauma patient, deal with it for their lifetime.
