Abstract This dissertation is about the educational utilization of storytelling and digital storytelling. Through literature review, it detects and analyses the main characteristics of storytelling and digital storytelling, the impact they may have on people and their learning, and presents several examples of their current use in education, along with some future prospects. Also, since education draws on philosophical, pedagogical and instructional design approaches, to support its practices, such approaches are also detected and analysed, leading to the design and production of instructional material on digital storytelling, according to the findings. The literature reveals that storytelling and narrative can provide a very promising learning environment and tactics, however, their impact can be particularly powerful, which raises ethical issues. Moreover, digital storytelling, as a field for new educational explorations, is still quite contained and ambiguous. As for the educational arena in general, the literature review shows that the process of instructional design, especially for blended learning environments, is quite complex, because it owes to take into consideration a great deal of factors on several levels. Therefore, the information provided by the literature is being related, so that certain ethical-ideological, theoretical and practical requirements and criteria may emerge, for the proper and effective utilization of storytelling and digital storytelling, for as many educational conditions as possible. The ethical-ideological concerns are not being resolved within this dissertation, however, it is being suggested that through the educational integration of reflection on the instructional materials, as well as on the educational processes, may be able to counterbalance this dimension. On the theoretical and practical level, the findings suggest that every design choice depends on the particular purposes and goals of each educational process that is being designed, therefore, this dissertation relates its findings with broad categories of educational functions, in order to support informed educational choices.
