Abstract Introduction: The Computer Aided Personal Interview offers important advantages, such as simplifying interviews, automatic validity checks, automatic data cleansing, no routing errors, automatic interviewer control, less missing data etc. Through the implementation of a Database Management System the preceeding advantages can be well developed, concurrently adhering to the principals of integrity, consistency, recovery, security and efficiency. The prospective mother- child cohort Rhea presupposes a follow up period with at least 7 contacts with the study participants. As of February 2007 approximately 1500 pregnant women have been included in this study. Aim: The aim of this study was to record the methods used for: the construction of the electronic questionnaires, the data management and the way the Rhea’s database were organized. Method: The electronic questionnaires were designed and data were organized through Microsoft Access 2003. The answers were predefined in closed type questions, validity checks were installed and skip patterns were broadly used for the easier and faster completion of the questionnaires. The data can be retrieved automatically using the statistical software Spss 15.0 and Stata 10 se. Results: Periodical analyses greatly diminished the existence of missing data.. Thus, the response rate of about 2500 variables was approximately 98%. The print cost was also eliminated and automatic routines of data checking and retrieval were also developed. Conclusions: Electronic questionnaires and systematic structure of Databases are a necessity in prospective studies with extensive data collection. Except from the advantages during the survey, the knowledge and the ‘’know how’’ obtained can be extremely useful in surveys to come.
