Abstract In this study we investigated peers’ participation at school play. 114 pupils took part in this research (50% boys, mean age = 12,6 years). The survey (conducted in schools in the Rethymnon municipality in 2019-2020) involved 94 Greek pupils and 20 pupils of other ethnicity. Interviews were conducted with both pupils and teachers, who only provided information on the 20 foreign students participating in the survey. In addition, an adapted version of the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure Ethnic (MEIM, Phinney, 1992) was used to assess the national identity. An effect of gender, school and class was found on the choice of playing. Also, it seems that playing transcends cultural differences, as no effect of ethnicity was found on the choice of games within the school. It seems that playing can be a field of acculturation for students of different ethnicities. Finally, it seems that during transmission from primary to secondary school, school play, and more specifically, symbolic play, tends to decline.
