Abstract The aim of this study was the synthesis and characterization of graphene oxide and its derivatives for future use in solar devices and was conducted as part of the dissertation in the Center of Materials Technology and Photonics at the Technical Educational Institute of Crete. In the first part of the study, the structure of allotropic forms of carbon is presented, and more specifically the structure of graphene, its methods of synthesis are analyzed, and the properties and applications of graphene are discussed. Next, the manufacturing process of graphene oxide from graphite, as well as its applications in solar systems, is extensively analyzed. The photovoltaic phenomenon is explained, and the types of conventional photovoltaic systems are presented, as well as their function. The types of organic photovoltaics and their function are also analyzed. The second part of the thesis focuses on the experimental procedures, the characterizations and the final results of the experiments carried out. The experimental procedure involved the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) from graphite powder, the synthesis of the trinitrofluorenone compound, and finally the preparation of the final product from the condensation reaction of TNF and GO. The final product was characterized by the methods UV-Vis, IR, XRD, and AFM
