Abstract Background: Patients and users of health services nowadays seem to be aware and particularly care for high quality of healthcare, in a health system that faces various difficulties in providing services, but has to keep updated on the continuous development of knowledge, medical developments and findings. That is why Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and lifelong learning of medical and nursing staff is a major priority of the healthcare system. Aim: The purpose of this study was to stress and evaluate the ongoing CPD as a mean of improving the quality of health services provided by the medical and nursing staff of the University General Hospital of Heraklion (PAGNI). Methods: The current cross-sectional study collected data by an extensive questionnaire (Participation Reasons Scale) provided to the medical/nursing staff of the Surgical Department of PAGNI. The sample was comprised of 99 physicians and nurses. The analysis was performed in the IBM SPSS 26.00, through parametric tests and at significance level a = 0.05. Results: The 63.6% (n=63) were nurses and the 36.4% (n=36) were physicians. The 87.9% of the participants considered that CPD is very important for the medical profession, although there is a 4% who do not consider it important. The majority of participants (87.9%) felt that they have sufficient knowledge and skills to provide high quality healthcare. Most of them considered that their participation in CPD programs should be mandatory (79.8%). The reasons why they considered that CPD should be mandatory are mainly the professional upgrade (25.3), or the aspect of ambition/competition (21.2%), as well as their improvement in matters of technological development (10%). Participants appeared to participate more frequently in inpatient classes, in-hospital classes, and less frequently in conferences/seminars, or other CPD training programs. The majority reported that they believe that CPD programs are best done during working hours, while many prefer equally during and after working hours. The most efficient way of conducting CPD programs seemed to be teaching in the form of lectures (43.4%), followed by case discussions (25.3%), clinical tutorials (24.2%) and e-learning (7.1%) in a very small percentage. Regarding the differences in the views of the medical staff regarding their demographic-professional profile, not many differences were found. It appeared that more men are participating in CPD programs although the percentage of women was not low, that they spend more training days, that they consider training topics more important for the prevention/management of in- Δημόσια Υγεία-Πρωτοβάθμια Φροντίδα Υγείας-Υπηρεσίες Υγείας Ιατρική Σχολή–Πανεπιστήμιο Κρήτης vi hospital infections and that their service provides several training opportunities (Pvalue<0.05). In contrast, women did not consider that their service provided enough CPD opportunities. Also, younger ages seemed to be looking more for the expansion of their knowledge and even with a private initiative (Pvalue<0.05). Focusing on the causes and factors that affect participation in CPD, these were assessed by the participants as follows: better matching between knowledge and skills based on the requirements of their profession, better meeting of patients' expectations, perspective of increasing efficiency, improvement of professional practice, development of necessary skills to maintain the quality of care provided, strengthening the stay in the current position and the evaluation of their professional development. Conclusions: The recognition of CPD as an integral part of the healthcare system and culture seems to be at a good level among the medical staff. But there are obstacles and inequalities in the opportunities given, that need to be taken into account. A comprehensive and detailed institutional framework should be developed which should propose, describe and allow participation in CPD equally for all health care professionals. It should give everyone equal opportunities regardless of sex, age, experience, job or occupation. Ensuring the availability of working hours, adequate staff and strengthening of e-learning will also contribute significantly to the promotion of CPD. Provision of motives by the responsible authorities is also considered a crucial issue that will contribute to CPD.
