Abstract The purpose of this thesis is the study of bilingualism and biliteracy development among students at University of Crete, their linguistics practices and the contributing factors. Specifically, a literature review was done about the subjects of language maintenance and language shift within the theoretical framework of Spolsky's language policy model as well as the development of literacy and biliteracy skills. The research is a multi-method one since both qualitative and quantitative data were utilized. The results were analyzed in a combined method in order to be crosschecked (methodological triangulation) and to ensure their reliability. Data collection was based on questionnaires with 64 students and semi-directed interviews with 10 students. According to our findings, bilingualism was developed as a result of the simultaneous use of the heritage language and the dominant language since childhood. Particularly, the major role of the family emerged especially that of mothers in language maintenance among children of migrant origin and mixed marriages. Furthermore, it was found that literacy development in the heritage languages burdens the families, as there is no state provision for the teaching of these languages, at least in Greece. In relation to the language choices of the students, it was observed that it depends on the interlocutor’s identity (age, relationship, spoken languages) in addition to the place where the conversation takes place, with some variations when it comes to public space. It was noted that literacy in the community language is not used in any systematic way by students, except for individual instances and especially when in contact with relatives-speakers of these languages. Finally, in reference to the self-identification of students as far as their origins is concerned, it was reported that they find it difficult to attribute a unique characterization, but always state that they feel like Greek citizens.
