| Abstract |
In April 1960, at the central Athenian bookstores, the first issue of the journal
Kinimatografos-Theatro (Cinema-Theatre) was released, a publication of the Superior Professional School of Cinema and Theatre and the Hellenic Organization of Public Relations “Horizon”. It was edited by Giannis Bacoyannopoulos and among its contributors were Roviros Manthoulis, Leon Loisios, Kostas Skalioras and Aglaia Mitropoulou. Despite the ambition of the magazine’s creators, for it to become organ of educating and cultivating the audience’s aesthetics, its life was extremely short and the publication was terminated after only four issues (September 1960). The dissertation focuses on this specific magazine and particularly on its rich content related to cinema-indicatively it includes essays on cinematic movements (such as French New Wave and Free Cinema), eminent film directors and important films, interviews, reports on film festivals and movie reviews-aiming to investigate its theoretical orientation and clarify its editors’ and collaborators’ positions on the seventh art. In the paper’s first part the identity of Kinimatografos-Theatro is presented, the journal’s “manifesto” is analyzed and an interpretation of the intentions of its publishers and editorial team is attempted, as well as the way in which their aspirations and beliefs dictated and shaped the character and the contents of the magazine.
