Abstract The present thesis examines school field trips as an institution of non-formal education and presents two educational proposals of planning and implementing field trips in the educational process. The first part, the theoretical one, discusses the concept and the impact of non-formal education in the educational process. In addition, two learning theories, Constructivism and Experiential Learning, associated with the implementation of activities in non-formal educational environments and their relation with school excursion are presented. Furthermore, the concept and the stages of field trips, the role of the teacher, the obstacles that may occur and the legislature about field trips in Greece are described. In the second part, two field trips, based on the theoretical assumptions made in the first part, are presented in detail. In the first one, in the history subject, a visit in a modern olive mill is described. In the second one, with start-line the concept of multiculturalism, two educational field trips are proposed. All field trips presented presented in the paper use sources of the broader region of Crete.
