Abstract The subject of this master thesis deals with the mechanisms of survival and resistance in occupied Greece during 1941-1944 and particularly in the geographical region of Peloponnese. Main objective of this work is to highlight certain aspects of social resistance. Basic source of information in this master thesis, except from the bibliography on the occupied period, is the “Archive Persson”. In this master thesis we try to examine more specifically the causes of the hunger, as well as the mechanisms and the social practices that were developed for the confrontation of problems both in the cities and countryside. The work is separated in three parts. The first part is based on the study of secondary bibliography. Firstly, we mention a few elements concerning the economy of Greece before the war and during the time of Occupation. Afterwards, we present the main reasons that caused the hunger in the big urban centers. Furthermore, we analyze the mechanisms of black market and of the bulletin of distribution of foods as well as the first revolutionary practices that people adopted in order to improve their nutritional situation in the cities. The second part of the work concerns the Occupation in the countryside and particularly in the region of Peloponnese based on the information that we draw from the “Archive Persson” but also on the secondary bibliography. In the beginning we present the social and economic situation that was shaped during the first years of Occupation in the countryside. Moreover, we describe the collective efforts of the countryside society to protect agricultural production, as well as the social conditions that were shaped in the past years of Occupation. Finally, the third part refers to the action of International Red Cross (IRC) of Peloponnese and of the organization of National Solidarity. In this section we analyze the first actions of IRC to fight the famine, as well as the difficulties involved in these efforts and the ways of their confrontation. Also, we present information on the activities of National Solidarity and its cooperation to the IRC.
