Abstract The following dissertation examines the relations between the Republic of Turkey and two countries of the Balkan region, namely Albania and Bulgaria, from the end of the Cold War to the present. Beginning with a brief presentation of the historical background of the Ottoman presence in the region, it goes on to examine the process of secularization in the new state that emerged after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire i.e. the Turkish Republic, but also the factors that allowed the final re-emergence of the Islamist movement in power. It asserts that these pre-existing factors, along with the new environment that was created after the end of the bipolar world system, led Turkish society to an identity crisis, an identity that under consecutive AKP governments from 2002 onwards has changed noticeably. Examining the interior dynamics of Turkish society is deemed necessary for any understanding of Ankara's foreign policy choices vis à vis the Balkan region in general, and the two aforementioned countries more specifically. For a better understanding of Turkey's modus operandi after the AKP came to power, special reference is given to the work of Ahmet Davutoglu, the architect of Turkey's new foreign policy. From his book Strategic Depth, this dissertation presents the parts in which the pillars of Turkey's foreign policy in the Balkans are underlined, but also the means Ankara utilizes to further increase her influence and power in the region. Finally, it examines the full spectrum of relations between the country with Albania and Bulgaria. Starting from the early 1990's, the foreign policy goals of these two countries, as well as Turkey's, are presented, goals that led to the enhancement of their bilateral relations. At the same time though, this dissertation examines the activities of Ankara's soft power instruments inside the aforementioned states, instruments which by utilizing the Ottoman legacy and the ties it creates, try to project Turkey as the symbolic protector of the Muslims residing in Albania and Bulgaria respectively
