Abstract The surgical treatment of morbid obesity with the vertical banded gastroplasty (VBG) is effective in improving the consequences of the disease , both organic and psychological, therefore improving the patients’ quality of life. Fifty nine (59) patients participated in our study and underwent VBG surgery from February 1996 until January 2001. Most of the patients were female (45/59, 76.3%), 19(32.2%) were single, 8(13.6%) were divorced and 32(54.2%) were married, while the mean age was 37.7±10.7 years. Seven patients (7/59, 11.9%) had a psychiatric history, 49 (66.1%) had at least one obese parent, while almost half the patients (26, 44.1%)had bulimia. The mean period of education was 12.0±3.6 years, the mean duration of the disease was 19.5±8.3 years and the BMI was 47.7±8.0. The psychiatric evaluation started when the patients were selected for surgery and continued until the conclusion of their follow-up, according to the study protocol, that is the end of the second post-operative year. On evaluation of the data, the family status and level of education do not seem to play a significant role in the evolution of the disease, whereas the presence of obese parent(s) does play a positive role. A large number of patients presents bulimic episodes preoperatively which diminish significantly postoperatively irrespective of gender, age, family status and education level of the patients. Women experience the disease more depressively than men preoperatively, although their general health index is better than men’s. Their depression improves more significantly than men’s postoperatively. Sensitivity in personal relations and stress are what troubles the patients the most preoperatively, and they continue doing so postoperatively in a lesser extent. The patients’ body weight is significantly reduced the first postoperative year and even more so during the second year irrespective of gender, age , family status and level of education. The patients’ psychological status is gradually improved postoperatively and this improvement has a positive correlation with the weight loss, i.e. the more weight they lose, the better they feel. In the same fashion there is an improvement in their quality of life postoperatively, as evaluated with the system BAROS. The result of surgical treatment in their life was very satisfactory. Their quality of life was improved . They reported positive changes in their social, professional, personal and sexual life. Their sentimental status and their trust in their recognition from society returned to normal levels and started having optimistic thoughts about their lives. These changes were more intense with greater weight loss. The patients adjusted to their new life circumstances very well. They started enjoying their everyday life and receiving more respect by their social environment, which had a positive effect on their treatment. Their compliance with the postoperative regime was satisfactory and this contributed decisively in their good outcome.
