Abstract |
In the new era of the society of information the demand for standardization in the methodology of recording, documenting and manipulating archeological data becomes apparent. This standardization will create the possibility of a wide scale data exchange between museums, cultural and educational organizations. The xml language emerges as a more and more popular format for the mark-up of electronic documents. Some of the main characteristics of xml documents is the maintenance of the structure that underlies the recorded information, the possibility of projection or exchange of data through the internet and the potential reuse of the documents by relational or object oriented data base systems. The input of data in an xml document resembles the formatting of data in natural language, rendering thus the language appealing for a broad group of potential users. Moreover, xslt, the xml formatting language, can help to present different views of the stored data. This feature allows the retrieval and presentation of the selected information from an on-growing volume of electronic documents. As an example for the demonstration of the potential of this mark-up language in the representation of information and its dissemination via the internet, the city of Veroia was selected and more specifically the city's historical and archeological evidence from the late Byzantine era. A presentation of this data using xml was set as a goal. The modeling of the information that had to be included in the system resulted in the creation of a Document Type Definition that serves the structure of the world of late Byzantine Veroia. The historical and archeological facts were recorded in xml. Different formatting stylesheets were created for the projection and the automated indexing of the data that were recorded in the system. The advantages of using xml for the recording of information are demonstrated through an electronic presentation for the city of Veroia. The data entered is displayed with different stylesheets. This approach resulted in the creation of different views of the recorded data and different ways for the display, indexing and navigation in the created document.
