Abstract The objective of this dissertation is the study of iconography of ancient Cretan coins from the 5th cent. B.C. till the 2nd cent. A.D. The numismatic material is organized according to the issuing authorities. The target is twofold: A) On the one hand to interpret the divine and heroic figures on Cretan coins, in order to define better their characteristics and their cult in Cretan cities. Often, opinions differ as regards the interpretation of some mythological representations. It is helpful, for better clarification, to study in parallel Cretan Inscriptions and sources of ancient authors. B) On the other hand to spot iconographic parallels in sculpture, as well as in other kinds of art, in order to find out cultural and artistic connections between Crete and other regions. The die-engravers of ancient Greek coins were occasionally inspired by statuary types, without faithful copy but with in a creative way. The lack of a description for ancient Crete, similar to that of Pausanias, makes the search of particular statuary types on Cretan coins very conjectural. It is noticed that on Cretan coins of classical period predominate local mythological subjects (Europa, Talos, Minotauros), whereas gradually emerge representations of Olympian Gods and hero-founders (either full-bodied or only of their head). Evidences for ancient cults are provided also by depictions of divine symbols and sacred animals. Some coin types that began in the classical period (e.g. Europa on bull or on tree, Apollo Styrakitas etc.) continued also, with small variations, during the early Hellenistic (323-270 B.C.), which is the period of maximum growth for Cretan coinage with the appearance of more mints. During Roman period some classical-hellenistic Cretan iconographic types were maintained, while many new subjects intruded in Cretan provincial coinage, deriving mainly from Roman art, with an effort to combine ideas and perceptions. In an Appendix is tried to present published and unpublished coin findings from excavations. The particular dissertation contributed mainly to the spot of several iconographic parallels and comparisons, which help us to explain some mythological scenes and to elucidate artistic relations and developments.
